Baisa Tea Gathering, December: Make Your Own Ofukucha
An announcement for the last “Tea Gathering” workshop of 2024 at Baisa Nakamura.
How about seeing in the New Year with an ofukucha you blended yourself?
There is an old tea called ofukucha.
Ofukucha is sencha served with a small pickled plum and a knot of kombu. It is drunk to celebrate the New Year and to wish for a year free of illness. The custom is said to come from Kuya Shonin, founder of Rokuharamitsu-ji, who during an epidemic in the Heian period served the sick a tea with a small pickled plum and knotted kombu and chanted the nenbutsu, at last driving the plague away.
Ofukucha today varies from region to region, from tea shop to tea shop, and from household to household. At this gathering you will blend an ofukucha to your own taste and take it home with you.
We have prepared some special ingredients so that you can blend an ofukucha that is entirely your own. We hope a one-of-a-kind ofukucha helps you into a good New Year.
This is our last gathering of the year, and we hope you will join us.
